American Violet opens next month!!!

The movie American Violet opens next month, and is based on the real-life experience of Regina Kelly, a waitress wrongly arrested and charged during a disastrous drug sweep in Hearne, Texas back in 2000. Kelly was one of 28 people arrested. Her refusal to accept a plea bargain eventually helped expose that District Attorney John Paschall case for the massive sweep was a sham, based almost entirely on the word of a pathological informant (who also claims he was beaten by police). Paschall promised his informant he’d drop the theft charges pending against him if the informant could produce information that would lead to 20 drug arrests.

Even after his case fell apart and Paschall had no choice to drop the charges against those who hadn’t alread plead guilty, he refused to exonerate anyone, telling the New York Times that of those charged, "I don’t doubt one minute their guilt in dealing drugs.” Paschall is still district attorney, and he’s not particularly happy about the movie. He told the Dallas Morning News, "The only way I’d watch it, I’d have to be handcuffed, tied to a chair and you’d have to tape my eyes open."

Like the series of wrongful drug arrests in Tulia, Texas, the Hearne scandal was largely attributable to the federal Byrne Grant program, which not only creates the unaccountable, multi-jurisdictional drug task forces like those responsible for Hearne and Tulia, but then also sets artificial, improper incentives by tying future funding to the number of arrests and drug seizures a task force makes. Oddly enough, the Bush administration actually phased out Byrne Grants. Obama and the Democrats in Congress are bringing them back.

A Tribute to my friend Andrew "Test" Martin!

Andrew was a VERY good long time friend who both Matt Bloom and I share many great memories. Andrew's passing is still so shocking. I am still waiting for Johnny Ace or Christian or Edge or Jericho or somebody to call me back in Japan and tell me it was all a mistake. It does not feel real. Andrew "TEST" Martin along with Matt Bloom and myself became like the three amigos as we traveled the road together and shared many great memories. Last night before our match, as Matt and I absorbed the news and tried to make sense of it all, the silence was broken with Matts words which I could not have said better myself. "You know what Val, all the friends we have lost, their deaths really sucked and saddened. But this one HURTS DEEP!"

Drew(burg), I will always remember the great times we had and the memories you provided. You will always have a special place in my heart and my life. I promise, you will never be forgotten.

More Police Brutality and PO PO lies!

Police brutality caught on video is becoming so commonplace that you think police would think twice before attacking people without provocation.
But it’s probably difficult to change years of unchained aggressiveness that has gone unenforced. The latest incident shows three Ft. Lauderdale police officers attacking a 22-year-old man in an elevator. As always, police claimed the man had attacked them first. After punching and tackling Joshua Daniel Ortiz, breaking his nose in the process, they charged him with felony battery on a law enforcement officer. Read the Read the arrest report.

But after prosecutors reviewed surveillance video from the elevator, they reduced the felony to a misdemeanor. Upon further review, they dropped the charge altogether. The Sun Sentinel, which reported the story, has a poll asking readers if the officers should be disciplined.

FREETARIAN: I totally agree and support this 53 year old woman's right to do as she wants. New Lead Ban Legislation Drastically Affects Motorcycle Industry

Rumors and speculation have been flying around for a few days now on a law that could affect small motorcycles considerably. As of yesterday, those rumors were confirmed in the form of a new policy that falls under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). The policy is a restriction on lead found in children’s toys and products. According to the policy, put together by the Consumer Product Safety Commision (CPSC), any product intended for children with lead at more than 600ppm is hereby banned from retail. FREETARIAN: This story rattles my anti-oppression bones to the center of it's marrow. I grew up motocross racing with my family. My brother Cameron has a daughter who started racing at 5 years of age and still races today at the age of 9. My daughter Celina is 3 1/2 years and I was very much looking forward to teaching her how to ride and get her racing. Motocross is an amazing sport that teaches kids responsibility and sportsmanship. Now our "Big Daddy Government" wants to stop our children from enjoying an amazing sport all in the name of safety.
